Choose Destination

When planning a trip, choosing the right destination is both exciting and essential—it sets the tone for your entire travel experience. When we're planning a trip, we always begin with a broad idea of which area of the United States we’d like to explore. From there, we narrow our focus to specific places we want to see and build a strategic itinerary that helps us make the most of our time.

  • Define Your Travel Goals. Think about the purpose of your trip. Are you looking for rest and relaxation, outdoor adventure, exploring historical cities, time with family, or educational opportunities? Your goal helps guide the kind of destinations to consider. A beach trip may suit relaxation, while a national park offers adventure and hands-on learning.
  • Do Your Research. Once you know your goal, start researching. Look into possible locations that fit your interests and priorities. Check weather, safety, crowd levels, and any special features that appeal to you. This step helps avoid surprises and makes your trip more enjoyable and efficient. Websites, travel blogs, park services, and local tourism boards are excellent resources to learn what to expect and what’s available.
  • Consider Practical Details. Evaluate how far you’re willing to travel, both in terms of time and budget. Make sure to look into accessibility for your group, especially if you’re traveling with children, seniors, or people with disabilities. Think about the drive times between stops, entry fees, and whether reservations are required at popular attractions. Research any travel restrictions, entry fees, or permit requirements ahead of time.
  • Strategically Plan Your Route. Once you’ve picked a general area, look at a map and plan how to move efficiently between key destinations. Group nearby attractions to reduce backtracking. Allow space in your schedule for meals, rest, and unexpected discoveries.  Being strategic with your time makes the trip less stressful and more rewarding. For our trips, we like to cluster points of interest that are close together so we don’t spend too much time driving and can instead enjoy immersive experiences. We also think strategically—visiting lesser-known sites during peak hours or tackling popular ones first thing in the morning. This not only helps reduce stress but often makes the trip feel fuller and more rewarding.
  • A Teacher’s Perspective. As a teacher, I approach travel as more than personal enrichment—it’s professional, too. I collect sensory souvenirs like pinecones, sand, rocks, audio recordings, brochures, and especially souvenirs with tactile features. These become hands-on teaching tools, especially helpful for students with visual impairments who benefit from concrete experiences tied to real places.
Choosing your destination isn't just about picking a place on the map—it's about crafting a journey that matches your goals and works with your time, interests, and needs. With thoughtful planning and a little curiosity, you can turn any region of the country into an unforgettable adventure.
