Preparation

by Carmen Willings
April 24, 2025

Preparing for a road trip involves planning your route, ensuring your vehicle is in good condition, and packing essential supplies. This includes checking tire pressure, oil, and fluid levels, and having a first aid kit, snacks, water, and entertainment for long stretches. Make reservations if necessary and research potential stops or attractions along the way. Don't forget to download maps or offline navigation tools, and ensure your phone and electronics are charged. Lastly, budget for fuel, accommodations, and any unexpected costs.

Burglar Proof Your Home (Unless You Have a House Sitter)

  • Notify immediate neighbors of your exact travel dates.
  • Lock all doors and windows, and secure sliding glass doors with extra locks or dowels.
  • Lock the garage and unplug the garage door opener to prevent remote access.
  • Have a trusted friend check on the house periodically.
  • Leave drapes and curtains open to create the illusion that the house is lived in.
  • Suspend any scheduled deliveries or have a neighbor pick them up.
  • Arrange for lawn mowing or snow removal (depending on the season).
  • Set timers for indoor and outdoor lights to turn on at random intervals to mimic a lived-in home.
  • Keep valuables out of sight or secure in a safe.

Prepare the Car

  • Have the car checked a week or two before departure: inspect brakes, headlights, taillights, belts, hoses, tires (including spare), wipers, and fluid levels.
  • Ensure the heater and air conditioner are working properly.

Emergency Supplies

  • Emergency roadside kit
  • First aid kit
  • Car jack and lug wrench
  • Jumper cables
  • Basic tool kit (screwdrivers, pliers, etc.)
  • Utility knife
  • Duct tape (for quick fixes)
  • Gorilla Tape (great for temporary window or body repairs)
  • Work gloves
  • Road flares or reflective triangles for safety
  • A “Help” sign for visibility in emergencies
  • Ice scraper and brush (especially if traveling in colder weather)
  • Blankets or extra layers for warmth in case of an emergency
  • Portable phone charger or car charger
  • Water and non-perishable snacks for emergencies

Additional Considerations

  • Travel Apps/Navigation: Download offline maps in case of poor reception in remote areas, including National Park Guides.
  • Health Essentials: Bring any necessary medications, hand sanitizer, and facial masks if needed.
  • Entertainment: Download audiobooks, create music playlists, or podcasts to pass time during long drives.
